How To Score

Method

Scorers should develop a routine as consistently following the same sequence whenever making a entry into the scorebook helps to minimise errors. The most common method involves working from the top of the scoresheet down; entering runs to the batsmen/sundries section, then runs to the score tally and, finally, runs in the bowlers section.

Balancing The Scorebook

To avoid problems at the end of the innings or day, scorers should ensure the records in both scorebooks are identical after every over and balance the book every five overs.

For the book to balance, two equations must be satisfied:
1. Runs scored by all batsmen plus all sundries = team cumulative total
2. Runs against all bowlers plus byes and leg byes = team cumulative total

If it is near the end of play, scores are close and the scorers cannot balance, a message should be communicated to the umpire that there is a problem. Scorers should not wait until the players have left the field.
